Mental Peace is within Your Power

2024-01-08T01:16:46-06:00Mental Health|

We are constantly bombarded by information! Fast technology and the advances in global connectedness have required us to use our thinking processes differently than ever before. We are now more apt to use our imagination, rather than being tied to conventional assumptions or just using repetitive logic when we make decisions. We are more tolerant to failure and more “ok” with experimenting and trying new things. It’s almost like we have developed this strong need for more information and change. We actually LIKE change now. Or so it seems. I remember the best work I did while working for a Fortune 500 company years ago. It was when I was [...]

Avoid Marriage Fractures by Discussing Expectations

2024-01-08T01:16:47-06:00Communication, Expectations|

Think of something you treasure. It might be a valuable heirloom clock, a Civil War gun passed down through the family, your great grandmother’s china, or a handkerchief given to you by your mother on your wedding day.  What would your expectations be about protecting this treasure. What words would you use to describe this treasure? VALUABLE, CHERISHED, SPECIAL, ONE-OF-A-KIND SENTIMENTAL, HEIRLOOM, PRICELESS All of these words could be used to describe something you hold dear and precious. Typically we take good care of these items by keeping them safe. We store them for use on special occasions and make sure they don’t get abused. So if this is the [...]

Loyalty vs. Trained Response-Which do you want in your marriage?

2024-01-08T01:16:47-06:00Love|

Lots of times when we use the word loyal it applies to our pets.  Dogs usually give us a ton of unconditional love and affection just because we provide them with food, shelter and attention.  Our Labrador can’t wait for either of us to come home anytime day or night.  She’s always there with a smile on her face and entire butt wagging with abandon!  That is loyalty on four legs.  You can also train a dog to come you when call them but loyalty is more automatic. Loyalty could also be demonstrated in the brave Olympian Lindsey Jacobellis just snowboarded in her fourth Winter Olympics.  She is amazingly loyal [...]

What Crucial Opportunities are we Losing by Being Overwhelmed?

2024-01-08T01:16:48-06:00Change, Stress|

When was the last time you just sat, alone, in the quiet? No phone, no tv, no tech of any kind. No one but just you. I’m waiting, so you can think… I can’t remember the last time that I really did nothing. Wasn’t reading or praying or trying to work something out in my mind. It’s hard to just let everything go and not have stress. That’s just how we Americans usually function. There’s research and some hard evidence that the harried, frenzied, frazzled and worn-out lives many of us lead are costing us more than we can imagine. The price is withdrawn from our bank accounts, relationships, and [...]

Relationship Altering Questions of Trust

2024-01-08T01:16:48-06:00Relationships|

It has been a personal belief of mine that no two people are perfectly suited for each other only. In other words, there isn’t this “one perfect person somewhere out there in the universe” that you have to find. Rather, by learning skills, developing tools, and ‘doing the right things,’ couples can have a satisfying relationship. This belief is also the theory in the research of many marriage and relationship experts. Why then, do some couples learn these abilities and skills, and others just can’t put them into practice, or they resist doing them? The answer appears to be TRUST. In “The Science of Trust” author and researcher John Gottman [...]

Overcome Fear Now!

2024-01-08T01:16:49-06:00Fear|

Fear is rampant. Turn on the TV and you see it very clearly. Fear is an essential physiological response to physical and emotional danger. If we don’t feel it, we could be in danger of legitimate threats. But often we fear situations in our daily, relational lives that are far from life or death. Usually these are personal fears relating to our own value and worth, or to our vulnerabilities and shame. Fear, in this personal sense, is an anxious feeling caused by our anticipation of a perceived danger or threat to WHO we are and WHAT we do. What are some of these? Types of Personal Fears: • Failure [...]

The Devil Really is in the Details

2024-01-08T01:16:49-06:00Communication|

There are two main ways to understand the details in your life as a couple: • Details that are the real minutia. That only get in the way and get your relationship derailed; or • Details we need to investigate to see what is going on deeper, underneath Scenario 1 It’s a Friday night and a man and a woman have just finished eating pizza. “What’s for dessert?” says the woman. “I’m having applesauce” says the guy. “I want thin mints!!” says the wife. (Girl Scout Cookie season don’t ya know) “Are you suuurrrre you want thin mints?” Pause. “Ok,” she says, “Bring me an applesauce.” The next evening the [...]

Three Real Differences in “Exceptional Couples”

2024-01-08T01:16:50-06:00Care, Communication|

Average couples wanting their relationship to be better have a very similar story. It goes something like this: “We don’t talk very well together, she says. The little things become bigger and bigger. I don’t even know what we fight about. I don’t feel like I’m very important to him. He doesn’t listen to me. So I get upset and try to get him to understand.” He says: “We just don’t communicate. I can’t seem to do anything right. She gets upset a lot, and so I shut down. We can hardly talk about anything without fighting”. “We are just so different,” they both say. How We Talk So many [...]

What’s At the Core of Every Great, & Terrible Marriage?

2024-01-08T01:16:50-06:00Heart, Relationships|

Couples need to see their relationship through the eyes of the heart. Think: What’s deeper, what’s underneath, what is really going on inside? We can’t just look at the outside, and the “what’s happening,” at the event or circumstances, or just what is being said. We have to look deeper. There is always more going on underneath. We start with the heart. A story: Phil and Brenda have been married for 15 years, have three kids, and both work. They have plenty of issues, debt and finances, parenting differences, and family of origin issues. Phil is a very friendly guy, and everyone likes him. The big issue in their relationship [...]

Couples Accomplishments Can Lead To More Satisfaction

2024-01-08T01:16:51-06:00Accomplishments, Communication|

We were recently at a conference in Nashville with Michael Hyatt and Best Year Ever LIVE. This is our 2nd year to attend this two-day intensive goal setting event. But goal setting just doesn’t encompass what this time is really about. One aspect is reviewing the accomplishments of the past year. I am a driven, high achiever; so goal setting isn’t new to me however it’s not usually accompanied by a review of the past. If I’m looking back, it’s to check something off as “complete” or because I feel regret and shame about not accomplishing something I set out to do. Spending some time revisiting the past year’s goals [...]
